VCAN-Controller Area Network Based Human Vital Sign Data Transmission Protocol

The vital signs diagnostics data is considered high risk critical data that requires time constrained message transmission. The continuous real time monitoring of patient allows prompt detection of adverse events and ensures better response to emergency medical situations. This research work proposes a solution for acquisition of human vitals and transferring this data to remote monitoring station in real time, over Controller Area Network Protocol (CAN).CAN is already been used as an industrial standardized field bus used in a wide range of embedded system applications where real time data acquisition is required. Data aggregation and few amendments in CAN are proposed for better utilization of available bandwidth in context to patient’s vital sign monitoring. The results show that proposed solution provides efficient bandwidth utilization with sufficient number of monitored patients. Even with high frame rate per patient per second, adequate number of patients can be accommodated.
